This month is a “two-fer” featuring both old and new iron.

The “old iron” is a 1965 DCOF-405 International Harvester “Emeryville” 80 inch steel cabover. It’s powered by a 262 Cummins mated to a 10 speed transmission and sports 4:10 IH rears.

Owner Michael Gay, of Pharr, Texas, bought the Emeryville from its original owner who happened to be the only driver of the tractor. This “almost new” International has only 300,000 original miles and was picked up by the original owner in the Fall of 1964 at the International Harvester plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Michael says that everything is original except for the Cummins which originally was a 220 bhp. The original owner had it converted to a 262 at Cummins in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Gay states that he’s a huge Emeryville fan because at age 14 he got his first truck free from his father which was a 1965 Emeryville. He slowly fixed it up while doing local work with it and had completed about an 80% restoration by the time he was 18. Unfortunately the truck was destroyed in a building fire in 1988. Michael wanted another one ever since and now has 2 Emeryville’s. He’s in the process of restoring a ’61 model by combining parts from two tractors.

Michael’s “new iron” is a 2005 Peterbilt 379 which is powered by a 475 bhp Caterpillar with an 18 speed transmission and 3:55 rears. The 70 inch, walk-in UniBilt Ultracab features leather seats and a remote control CD player.

Gay hauls mostly auto parts in a dry van throughout the Mid-West and is leased to his own company, ISI Logistics South. He’s married and enjoys restoring old trucks and showing his Emeryville at American Truck Historical Society events.
