Love 'em or hate 'em, but let's face it, old cabovers are cool. Once the king of the road before trucking deregulation and overall length laws were no longer effective, the cab-over-engine (C.O.E.) is now a rare sight on the highways of the United States. While today's truckers run modern conventionals with amenities that rival some of the fanciest luxury cars in the world, many of us harp for the "good old days" of trucking when trucks were trucks and you had to be tough as nails to drive them.
But if you're a fan of cool old cabovers, then you're gonna want to read on, as Tom Evans of Greenville, Tennessee is the proud owner of this classic 1974 Kenworth K123.
Powered by a Cummins NTC 350, mated to a Roadranger 13 speed with 38,000 rears with Kenworth 4 bag air-ride, and all of it riding on a 164" wheelbase, Tom's Kenworth looks good no matter what, both when parked and showin' off at a truck show or when rollin' down the highway.
While most old cabovers of this vintage are pretty worn out and have millions of miles on them, Tom told us that his truck has relatively low miles for a truck of its age. "Its original owner really didn't work the Kenworth all that hard" he says. "When the truck's original owner retired, he did a full frame off restoration of the Kenworth" Tom continued to tell us.
And it shows for sure! Everything has been gone through on this classic K123, from its interior to its driveline and exterior, and it's now probably a nicer truck than the day it rolled off the Kenworth assembly line. And from the photos Tom sent us here, we couldn't agree more!
But not long after the Kenworth was restored, its original owner passed away and the truck went up for sale. Tom saw it and as someone who always loved old cars and trucks, he purchased it for his own personal use as a play toy and for work around his farm. While Tom takes it to car and truck shows, he did use it to move his household and shop from New York to Tennessee several years ago.
Now age 78, Tom said he is looking to sell the Kenworth. "While I love this truck, at my age and state of health, I need to find a smaller vehicle." But even at his age, Tom still likes to stay busy and enjoys working on other numerous vintage cars and trucks he owns.
